Whether you’re an entry-level bookkeeper or a seasoned veteran with 20 plus years of experience, the American Institute of Professional Bookkeepers (AIPB) provides advanced training to help you advance in your career. With over 30,000 members, AIPB Certification has become the national standard in bookkeeping, and certified bookkeepers (CBs) are proving to be more valuable than ever before.

If your bookkeeping skills are keeping you from reaching your career potential, here are some things you can expect by getting certified.

Benefits of Certification

Enhanced Professional Status

Like a CPA in accounting, CBs are some of the most qualified bookkeepers in the industry, and many of them attribute AIPB certification to their enhanced professional status. In fact, a survey by Lewis & Clark Research found that 45 percent of CBs were promoted or given greater responsibility within their company after getting certified. Another 72 percent say that certification was crucial to their improved status.

“Certified Bookkeepers demonstrate not only a proven knowledge of basic GAAP accounting, but [also] the motivation to learn and the desire and ambition to be a professional,” says Margaret Stone of Pima Community College.

Greater Job Prospects

CBs are predicted to have more job opportunities in the future than those who are not certified. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics’ (BLS) Occupational Outlook Handbook, “Demand for full-charge bookkeepers is expected to increase as they are called upon to do much of the work of accountants. Those with several years of accounting or bookkeeping certification will have the best job prospects.”

The BLS expects the job outlook for bookkeepers to grow by at least 11 percent from 2012 to 2022, which is considered average relative to other industries. With this growth expectancy, there will likely be a greater need for bookkeepers with AIPB certification in order to stand out, and more companies will be forced to hire bookkeepers with advanced skills.

Increased Compensation

Logic dictates that the more education and certifications you have the more valuable you become to a company given your additional training. This mindset holds true for many companies who rely on bookkeepers to manage their finances. Roughly 46 percent of CBs in the Lewis & Clark survey say they received a raise after becoming certified, and 34 percent of freelance CBs say that certification helped them attract new clients.
